Our name · Our island story

VIKA. A journey.
A place to pause.

Pronounced Vee-kah, VIKA draws inspiration from two strands of Norse seafaring heritage, reflecting Orkney’s enduring connection to the sea.

A sheltered bay. The Old Norse word vík means a bay or inlet. For us, it evokes a safe haven: somewhere to arrive, settle in and feel at home.

A journey by oar. Vika sjóvar was a Norse measure of distance at sea, associated with the distance rowed between changes of oarsmen. It speaks of island journeys, changing rhythms and a well-earned rest.

Two inspirations, one welcome. Your own place to pause in Orkney.

Our story · Our island roots

Our roots in Orkney

VIKA was built in 2026, ready to welcome guests for the 2027 season.

VIKA is owned and run by Yvonne and Max, whose family home is across the gravel drive. Should you need any help or advice during your stay, they are on hand to assist.

Yvonne’s family roots in Orkney stretch back to the 1600s, through the Baikie, Kent and Rendall families—a personal connection to the islands that forms part of VIKA’s story.
